Alright In Sort Of A Limited Way For An Off-Night ([info]grammardog) wrote,
Ughhhhhhhh... poor Bea Arthur is throwing up again. I don't know what to do with this guy. Vet? No vet? Last time this happened it basically cost thousands of dollars to have fluids and anti-nauseants administered, and we didn't even find out what was wrong. Oh, and he had the surgery, which turned up absolutely nothing. I don't know what to do.

ETA: After puking five times, Bea Arthur appears to have had a miraculous recovery. I fell asleep at about 3:30, and when I woke up at 4:30, he was licking my hair and trying to get me to feed him. Also, his mouse was all tangled up in the towel I put down in case he threw up again. Also, he just jumped three feet in the air and pounced on top of a small piece of paper. This cat is going to kill me.

Is it possible he's just prone to overeating and making himself sick? We gave Ollie chicken baby food and chicken broth when he got sick a couple of years ago and were able to wait it out. I hope it blows over on its own. :( Poor baby Bea.

He's never been an fast eater, or overeaten to the point of making himself sick. There was a small hairball in the first puke, so I was hoping that was it. Then he seemed hungry, so I fed him his normal dinner. He ate a bit, then barfed it up. He's puked a couple of times since then, just froth, and possibly bile. God, this is gross, sorry. I called the emergency vet and they suggested just riding it out without food or water for 12 hours. I just worry so much because of his history. WTF is wrong with this cat? Poor guy is laying on a towel right now looking like he feels just awful.

Poor sweet thing. I hope 12 hours does the trick for him. It sucks that he feels bad and there's nothing you can do for him except wait. :(

Try giving him plain unseasoned cooked chicken breast and also plain unseasoned cooked white rice... those are two of the easiest things for a cat to digest...

Is it the same kind of yakking as before?

My cats yak sometimes, but usually it's a hairball. Brianna once yakked for days, to the point of dry heaving... I knew it was because she had a stuck hairball. It kept getting worse over time, and I ended up switching foods, and she hasn't had that problem again.

I've had a cat that constantly over-ate, and we had to limit the quantity of food he would get at one time. Once we started doing that, he was better.

I hope hope hope it's nothing severe... hoping it's something simple like a hair ball.

It seems the same as before, yeah... four episodes in four hours. That's what makes me so nervous. But as my mom said, they weren't able to find out what was wrong with him, even after doing surgery, so until there's a danger of dehydration, I might as well let him be sick here for free. I called the emergency vet and they said he would be okay without food or water for 12 hours, so I guess I'll see what happens tonight. Poor thing.

Poor Bea! And poor you - I know how worrying it is :-(. I hope he recovers again, and permanently. I'm glad the vet's office could give you the ok to ride it out for at least the next 12 hours, maybe having no food/water for that time will settle his stomach.

I think of all cats as pukers, just at different schedules and patterns. Mine woke me up a couple nights ago heaving and had barfed in three or four different spots. It's gross and no fun to watch but he's fine now. A few months ago I started giving him Petromalt, even though he didn't always throw up fur balls, and he has been doing less puking since then. Is there Petromalt in Canada?

Sorry for Bea being sick and for you being stressed out. :(

not being a pet owner, i have no idea if petromalt exists in canada or what it is,

BUT

if it is not available in canada, i can obtain and send you some pretty easily if you like? i have access to the US at least every 2wks.

Aw, thanks! I'm going to look at my vet's office and see what they've got. I suspect it contains petroleum as the active ingredient, which I've seen in other hairball remedies before.

That is so bizarre to me! I've had cats all my life and none of them have ever barfed anything except one hairball every six months - no struggling. I don't know if Petromalt is a thing, but I've seen hairball remedies which contain petroleum, which I assume is the active ingredient in it? I'll have to check it out.

God, I'm so glad I scrolled back here to see that you updated that B.Art is doing better. JERK CAT STOP WITH THE BARFING FREAKOUTS.

Sigh.

Skritches to both of you.

I also encourage the hairball stuff - I don't think it's called Petromalt here, but similar stuff is available at vet's offices and it works pretty well when Pumpkin has pukey spells. I should give it to him more often, really.
