I used this tutorial as the inspiration to make this item today. It's a former cotton bed sheet with a tear in it that I decided to recycle into something more useful... a knitted bathmat!

Bea Arthur checking it out:

Bathmat made from recycled bedsheet. And Bea.

Yep, he likes it... you can tell because of how he's going to knead the crap out of it:

Bathmat being kneaded.

Here it is all wrapped up pretty. ([info]joanofarrgh gave me that lovely little print on the wall!)

IMG_3377

I just tore the bedsheet into thin strips, attached the strips together as described in the tutorial and went at it. It only took me four or five hours while chatting with a friend on my couch with margaritas. I wasn't sure how I felt about it at first as it was knitting up, but now it's so squishy, soft, and purposeful that I just love it.

I've been pretty big into functional crafts recently, probably due to my apartment being the size of your apartment's bathroom closet. While tiny little crocheted sushi rolls or paper robots ARE cute, I think I would fly into immediate cardiac arrest if someone gave something like that to me as a gift.

ME TOO re: functional crafts. I have always liked the idea of really big knitting-- so thick it could be more like furniture than fabric. I think that counts! How big were the needles?

Really Big Knitting is also really fun... I like instant gratification and crafts that I can start and finish in one sitting are my favourites. The needles I used are giants... they say "35" on the end but I'm not sure what kind of a sizing system that is. I'd say they're about an inch in diameter. In retrospect, I think I would tear the sheets into inch-wide strips instead of 1.5" to make the bathmat a bit more "hole-y" and stretch the bedsheet a little farther (this mat used the entire full bedsheet).

Oh, I meant to reply to your design blogging post but got distracted at Apartment Therapy, of course. I also found most of those picks completely maddening from a financial perspective but mostly a practical perspective. Half a grand on a glass eye? Jeez. Also, that cluster lamp was maybe the ugliest thing I've ever seen, and certainly the ugliest $3300 thing I've ever seen.

lovely work! way to repurpose that sheet, too.

all i seem to make lately is functional stuff... which isn't such a bad idea, right?

Absolutely not. I used to be such a packrat... now I want everything to be able to be used in three different ways. I mean, that's not entirely true... I still love things that are just beautiful to look upon, but I need another entire apartment to house it, is all.

That's so cool! And I like that it got the Bea Arthur Stamp of Approval.

The little print is wonderful, too :-).

Here's to functional crafts - you're great at 'em!

I don't think I could turn down knitted sushi or a paper robot if I was given one. Some things are needful no matter what. I'm with you on the useful crafts though, but then I consider jewelry useful!

Love the bathmat!

I couldn't turn it down, but I would forever stress over where the hell to keep it. I have been known to slice mushrooms on the coffee table... my house is just THAT small.

Aw, it's true! We are no longer neighbors.

I did buy some gorgeous tiny metal DPNs at a thrift shop the other day for 40 cents, which the lady behind the counter informed me had belonged to her grandmother, who had knit socks for her children with them. The lady behind the counter was easily 70 herself, so I now I feel like I can never lose these needles, EVER.

I would say that's an accurate statement!

I think I've only ever purchased a few pairs of knitting needles, but I have a ton that I got at Value Village over the years. While they gouge you on things like brand name clothing ($60 for a second-hand jacket GO EFF YOURSELVES), they seem to have no idea what knitting needles are actually worth, so they bundle large bags of them together for a dollar or two. I used these ones, which have "35" written on the bottom:

Bea Thinks About Jumbo Knitting.

Bea for scale.

I agree with functional crafts! Not only is my apartment probably smaller than yours, I have this thing about spending a lot of time and energy on something that is never going to get used. It kills me to think I'd make someone a sweater or something and it would sit in a drawer and never see the light of day.

I admit I kind of enjoy making useless crafts for OTHERS. I just don't care to have them, myself.

You know, I wouldn't have guessed at how small your place is considering the photography you take; it looks spacious and neat as a pin. How do you manage quilting in such a small environs? I imagine you have to be neat as fuck or else it would be mayhem and Bea would go nuts!

I went thrift-shopping yesterday with B and found this FABULOUS piece of fabric that is just so lovely on its own I might hang it on the wall somehow. I will take photos and post them. Thought of you!

"Neat as a pin" made me laugh pretty hard. Generally every photo I take involves moving a bunch of shit out of the way. I rarely have it together. Quilting is really tough... I don't keep anything set up for any length of time, because I quilt on my table. I would LOVE to have a second bedroom for that purpose!

I can't wait to see the fabric. Do it NOW!

I'm kind of the same way, even though we do have quite a bit of space here, I don't really want to add any more decorative items. But, instead of making functional things, I just try to sell anything I make! It's rare that I want to keep something.

Will it unravel?

What is your position on rug hooking?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]grammardog
2008-09-27 05:23 pm UTC (link)
It shouldn't unravel... I just secured it the same way I secure any knitting when I'm through. It may get a little raggy when washed because the strips are raw at the edges, but it would probably just trim up pretty easily.

I've never tried rug hooking, nor do I have a very good idea of how it's done! My friend's mom makes beautiful hooked rugs... it seems like crazy amounts of work.

Hi lady!

I was wondering what size knitting needles you used for this. I just picked myself up a pair of 25 mm needles the other day because they are too silly for words I want to knit everything with them!

Hm... I don't know what size they were! They don't have anything written on them, as I recall, but they are probably about 25 mm in diameter. I think they would do just fine for this purpose!
